fiber-what?! fiber optic on the sun ray 2fs!

October 27th, 2006

i’m just mentioning it here so i won’t forget it again… which will likely happen in about five minutes up to four hours - depends on the distraction level i’m forced with tonight. ;) a set of mt-rj fiber optical connectors - image courtesy of www.networkcables.com

as we all know the sun ray 2fs virtual display comes with a copper and fiber-optical port for networking. i was just searching for the specs of the fiber port again, and it turns out that the sun ray 2fs comes with a “mt-rj” type optical connector which connects to a 100base-fx fiber network. had to write this down so i won’t forget it!

just to make it clear: the sun ray does not support a hot failover if you plug in both connectors (rj45 for copper and mt-rj for fiber). it will take the first it gets hold of and then turns off the other port! if you plan to have both options on your desk to swap in case of one going down you’re forced to restart the unit to get the other port working.

firefox release candidate 2 for solaris is out

October 13th, 2006

masaki katakai has blogged that the contributed version of firefox rc2 for solaris is out. check out some exiting new features!

Get Firefox!

download firefox rc2 for solaris here!

firefox release notes:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0/releasenotes/

alfred peng has written down some of his personal opinions on firefox rc2. mostly i agree with him, but i don’t like the idea of having an internal spellchecker which corrects all of my entries to web forms, this blog etc. it is most likely that i’ll switch it off as soon as i’ve changed to firefox v2 stable. which means that you’ll likely see all the typical errors that you’re used to while reading this blog. ;)

cde vs. gnome for sun rays

October 11th, 2006

the thinguy, a.ka. craig bender, blogs on why he’s in favor of cde over gnome for sun ray environments. his main point is that gnome is not designed as a multi-user-per-desktop system, which is definately true. ever tried logging into a gnome-system with the same account twice? it goes mad quite fast… for example the gnome session manager is bugging around, even tho you’re not using it all.

anyway, cde is not what i’d call sexy nor up to date - an opinion that craig shares, as far as i have understood his posting. that’s why i am waiting for cam-support (controlled access mode, better known as kiosk mode) for gnome, which is supposed to come within the next two sun ray server v4 updates, as far as i know (no grants here, i’m not affilated with sun nor it’s engineering team for sun ray). perhaps we can then mix cam-only and normal users in a failover-group as well? would definately be cool!

java snakes on a plane: jython

September 26th, 2006

i wonder how many j* languages are out there… a.sundararajan, who wrote the syntax comparision between java, groovy and jruby, i’ve suggested you before (and before), came up with a jython companion today. additionally he also compares javascript to java (who thinks that this is the same will get banned from my blog instantly ;)) in this chart.

more java, ruby, groovy!

September 19th, 2006

a. sundararajan continued his comparision chart mentioned earlier, although he insists that it’s not complete and he is still learning the languages depicted. anyway, i think it gives you a nice overview of differences and what these languages have in common. for more code internals of java, groovy and (j)ruby click here.

by the way, sun hired the two main developers of jruby, so we might expect even more output of this project in the future due to full-time development.

java, ruby, groovy!

September 18th, 2006

mr. sundararajan of sun wrote a nice syntax comparision of java, groovy and jruby. worth watching while switching from one language to another.
